At the family cottage on Wixom Lake she had many exciting adventures with her friends in her late teens. ![]() Barbara spent many evenings at her grandmother?éé-s dining room table in the late 1920?éé-s and early 1930?éé-s listening to Dow employees who had arrived in Midland and stayed at ?é£Aunt Em?éé-s?é¥. Her paternal grandmother, Emma Thurber, ran a boarding house on Ashman Street. Getting her driver?éé-s license at age 13, she delivered groceries in an old pickup truck to Midland families. ![]() She grew up on Gordon Street and spent many of her childhood years helping her family at the Atkinson and Thurber grocery store at 110 Main Street. She had 4 daughters Marta, Lynne, Marianne, and Diane. Lloyd (Jack) and settled into married life first in Bay City while her husband finished business college, then in Midland. She went on many home deliveries of babies and had interesting tales to tell of driving through snow storms and being unable to contact the ?é£outside world?é¥ if the patients didn?éé-t have phones.
